It's worth remembering that no powerful constituency will ever go out of its way to publicize its own failures or corruption; we're only going to hear about that from their competition. So you've got to read Republicans in order to learn about the failures and corruption of the Democrats, just as you've got to read Dems to learn about the failures and corruption of Republicans; you've got to read US sources to learn about the failures and corruption of the Russians and Chinese, and you've absolutely got to read Russian and Chinese sources to learn about the failures and corruption of those with power in the US.

Agreed; but our technologies for determining "truths" so far pretty much boil down to (1) that sort of check&balance competition of info&ideas, (2) juries of randomly selected peers, and (3) consensus – all imperfect methods, but all a lot better than nothing.
